iPhone Appidemic: Army of Darkness Defense

I’m not going to use any quotes from the movie Army of Darkness in this article. That’s my promise to you, gentle reader. I mean, I could. I just watched the movie again, as I kind of had to after playing this iPhone/iPad game a few times. But it wouldn’t be fair to its developers because Army of Darkness Defense is good enough to sell itself on gameplay alone…although it’ll never have to.

Army of Darkness: Defense is a “tug-of-war, casual defense game” based on the not quite final battle scene from Army of Darkness, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell as Ash. Ash has recovered the Necronomicon, the deadites want it back, so they’re storming the castle to get it. It’s your job to hold them off.

The game contains over 100 quotes from the movie, along with characters such as Lord Arthur, Sheila, Evil Ash and even Henry the Red.

The defense mechanic is much more linear here than in your standard tower defense game. The deadites attack from the right of the screen, and you step out to meet them. You can move left and right to gain the correct position against them, and your boomstick fires automatically.

The main strategic element comes in how you surround yourself with soldiers. You can choose from sword boys, knights, archers and more, all of whom are happy to lay down their lives to protect you and the book.

Throughout the game, you earn coins to purchase upgrades for your soldiers, the castle and yourself (the gauntlet, “the wrong book,” the deathcoaster, etc.). You can also buy coins as in-app purchases if you’re not earning them quickly enough for your tastes.

It’s joyful. If you’re a fan of the movie, you’ll love just hearing the quotes, which aren’t only used as soundbites in the game, but to comedic effect in the instructions as well.

And although that’s the selling point, the gameplay is quite fun regardless of its inspiration. It gets difficult, as well it should, and buying coins seems to become a necessity. Regardless, it’s obvious the developers at Backflip Studios are fans of Army of Darkness, and they’ve done a great job of transferring the goofy fun of the movie into their game.
