Samsung countersues Apple for patent violations

Samsung Galaxy GirlAs we reported on Gadgetell, Apple has sued Samsung for violating 16 trademarks and 10 patents when it allegedly used the iPod and iPad as an inspiration for the Samsung Galaxy line of phones and tablets. Now, it’s Samsung’s turn as it has countersued Apple for allegedly violating 10 of its patents relating to “power reduction during data transmission, 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission, and wireless data communication technology,” as reported by Reuters.

What is seemingly unusual is that Samsung didn’t file the lawsuit in America, but instead filed lawsuits in Seoul, South Korea (5 patent infringements), Tokyo, Japan (2 patent infringements), and in Manheim, Germany (3 patent infringements). It would be interesting to find out Samsung’s reasoning, but there’s no information available on the specifics of the lawsuits, and Apple hasn’t responded yet to this latest development.

What’s also unusual is that despite these lawsuits, Samsung and Apple rely on each other for quite a bit of business. Recently, Apple began using Samsung solid-state drives (SSDs) in its MacBook Air laptop, replacing the slower Toshiba model. In addition, Samsung makes the A4 and A5 application processors and the flash memory chips that the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 use. Both companies rely upon each other and, at the same time, compete which each other.
