iPhone Appidemic: Streets of Rage 2

Streets of Rage 2 harkens back to a dark, dark time (the 80s) when street gangs wandered our streets (all our streets), flaunting their identical mohawks and brightly colored coats, spray painting our schools with words like “NINJA” and “MUTANTS RULE.” Since the police at that time were legally required to keep criminals on the street, the only solution was for a sufficient number of bad dudes (who were also good citizens) to take the streets back, one punch at a time.

SoR2 is a port of the classic brawler. You choose one of four fighters, each with a mix of strengths and weaknesses to fight your way through waves of gang members. Along the way, you can power up by using knives, lead pipes, and grenades dropped by thugs, or utilize your amazing special attacks when you’re about to be overpowered. Be careful though, as your specials will also drain your health.

Fortunately, you can replenish it by eating the food you’ll find hidden in the city’s mailboxes and garbage cans.

Yeah, I know, it was the 80s.

You have a D-pad to control movement and three buttons to control your kicks, punches, and specials. There are also combos that’ll allow you to do more damage, provided you can time it right. When a thug drops a weapon, you can walk over and pick it up for a big combat bonus: knives are short but deadly, and the lead pipe gives you a huge reach.

If you need backup, SoR2 features multiplayer over bluetooth (3rd gen iPhone and iPod touch only).

Streets of Rage 2 is a great throwback to the days of Death Wish 3 when all you needed to win the War on Drugs was a bandana and knuckle gloves. Older gamers will feel a rush of nostalgia with each punk they jackhammer, but for those who don’t remember plunking quarters for one more battle, the simple gameplay, retro graphics, and strange villain choices (The level boss is a bartender? When did we have jet packs?) will be as confusing as the end of The Dark Crystal.
